Mitch Baird
Mitch Baird realized that at a certain age you need to look at health, nutrition and training with different eyes. At around 38 years old a realization occurred that training to be an athlete needed to change into training to get old. After a sport injury he decided to find out how to fix the problem naturally while improving his abilities and functions. The answer came from a dear friend and mentor, Grandmother Renee Thomas-Hill, who gave him a teaching on moving and eating like our ancestors. When people do this, many of the things that ail them will go away. His research led him to Yoga. He realized that there is a difference between training for sports and training for health. After he healed his injury with yoga, he looked into teacher training as a way to bring Yoga into First Nations communities. He graduated the YES Level 1, 2 and Pre Natal Yoga training programs through East to West Yoga with Susie Dias and under the teachings of Cheryl Gordon at The Yoga Centre Of Niagara. He also believes that nutrition is the key to overall health and uses traditional diets in his practice. He instructs in many places including:
- Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers
- Working with Freeing the Human Spirit instructing in detention centers for inmates, presented about Yoga’s benefits at the National Aboriginal Diabetes Association conference
- Presented at the Aboriginal Physical Activity and Cultural Circle on the benefits of Yoga
- Helped create a Aboriginal specific Yoga resource for SOADI (where he works) and Sweet Grass Yoga with proceeds to help fight Diabetes in the Aboriginal Community
At 45 he feels Yoga has helped him stay active in other areas of his life and keep his body healthy. Please feel free to contact him about yoga workshops or training or hit him up on Facebook.
