Microbiome & The Gut: Clinical Solutions from Ground Zero of Autoimmunity with Kiran Krishnan
- Kiran’s “Triad of Autoimmunty” = Genetic Predisposition, Environmental Factors, Dysbiosis/Dysfunction in Microbiome
- Viral infections can produce compounds that look like parts of your own tissue to hide themselves from your own immune cells
- “Leaky Gut”, or increased intestinal permeability drives systemic inflammation
- T-Reg cells modulate the immune system and shut off inflammatory cascade – and they’re regulated, in large part, by a healthymicrobiome
- It is now possible to increase microbiome diversity, calm inflammatory cascades, repair the mucosal layer of the gut, and specifically target keystone species within the microbiome with precision prebiotic therapies – Watch and learn!
Dr. Alejandra (Alex) Carrasco shares her approach to functional lab testing for her chronic disease and autoimmune patients. The intention of this presentation is to educate practitioners and empower patients to become more literate regarding the testing they may want to discuss with the doctor/health practitioner.
Areas of testing discussed include:
- Comprehensive Functional Bloodwork
- Hormones & Neurotransmitters
- Heavy Metals, Toxicity, Glyphosate, etc…
- Genetics/Epigenetics Stool / GI Testing
Dr. Alex also shares her general approach when assessing potential internal and external root causes & triggers of autoimmunity, as well as some great tips as to “where to start” when it comes to formulating a healing plan!
Functional Lab Testing for Autoimmune Disease with Dr. Alejandra (Alex) Carrasco
Optimizing Epigenetic Expression: Focus on Autoimmunity with Dr. Kara Fitzgerald
Dr. Kara Fitzgerald explains the basics of methylation and epigenetics, and continues further along that path to cover ways that these factors play a role in the development of, and reversal of, autoimmune disease and other chronic conditions.
- When (and how) Dr. Fitzgerald recommends starting to work on optimizing epigenetic expression when someone is thinking about having kids
- When blindly supplementing high dose methyl donors, such as B12 and folate, might not be in our best interest
- Dietary choices that will support optimal methylation status and genetic expression
- The role of stress and trauma (physical or emotional) regarding methylation and systemic inflammation
- Important cross-reactivity research pertaining to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and several other autoimmune conditions
- A breakdown of the physiology & immunology – what we know about how and why this happens
- Details about how this research is done – and what the clinical value may be in the future
- Gluten sensitivity as a neurological illness, not just something which impacts the GI tract
The Role of Molecular Mimicry in Autoimmunity with Dr. Datis Kharrazian
RCCX: Autoimmunity, Psychiatric Illness, Emotional Processing, & Joint Hypermobility with Michael McEvoy
- The RCCX gene cluster is located on chromosome 6, and is one of the most complex gene clusters in the entire human genome
- Clinically useful testing for this gene cluster is not yet commercially available – one must use symptoms, history, investigative questioning, etc…
- There are several very important genes that can be impacted in an individual who fits the RCCX profile, including CYP21a2 (related to the production of cortisol and aldosterone), Complement C4 (linked to autoimmunity, autism, and schizophrenia), and TNXB (related to dysfunctions of the extracellular matrix and connective tissue symptoms).
- Michael and others who are studying the RCCX gene cluster have found many ways to offset and workaround some of the challenging situations individuals with this issue might find themselves in – and he shares them with you!
- There is no single root cause of autoimmunity – Torea will explore several possibilities with you
- The old approach to autoimmunity involved ignoring symptoms, waiting until a diagnosis is received, treating it like a disease of the organ being affected (it’s actually a disease of the immune system), and was generally unsuccessful
- The new approach is more proactive, focused on investigative work to determine drivers, triggers, root causes, and based on early detection, lifestyle, diet, and other natural interventions in early stages
- Mindset is everything. Autoimmune doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you –
- it’s all about perspective! Our thoughts and emotions have a direct impact on our biology.
Autoimmune from 30,000 Feet – Triggers, Root Causes, & Practical Solutions with Torea Rodriguez
Dietary Approaches to Wellness: The Wahls Protocol (for Autoimmunity) with Dr. Terry Wahls
- Dr. Wahls unbelievable healing journey – and how she reversed her own degenerative MS. (We dare you not to cry.)
- A discussion on the groundbreaking clinical studies she’s been running for the last 4+ years to demonstrate the healing power of dietary and lifestyle interventions in MS specifically
- The basics of the Wahls Protocol for Autoimmunity: a food and lifestyle medicine approach to reversing AI disease and regaining your life
- Simple ways to get your entire family on board with eating a nutrient-dense whole food diet
- 84.5 Million Americans (1 in 4) have seen a doctor for some kind of skin disease
- Skin diseases cost the US healthcare system over $75 Billion annually
- Jen has identified 16 primary root causes of skin rashes – and shares them all with you!
- If you have a skin rash, or autoimmune skin condition – you may want to avoid certain natural “moisturizers”! (Watch and find out which ones!)
- Our skin has its own microbiome – which plays a crucial role in overall skin health, as well as modulating the immune system in the skin (autoimmune)
Autoimmune Conditions of the Skin & Natural Solutions with Jennifer Fugo
The HURT Model – Connections Between Trauma, Emotions & Autoimmune Disease with Dr. Keesha Ewers
- The well-known ACE’s study showed a very clear link between early childhood trauma and autoimmune disease, cancer, and shorter life expectancy.
- 80% of AI patients are women – Dr. Keesha analyzes several reasons why this is so, from hormones to differences in the way women’s brains are wired compared to men. (HINT: Women are better mutli-taskers!)
- We learn about the link between perfectionism and autoimmune disease – and how she was able to “heal” her own perfectionism along her personal healing journey
- When we’re overscheduled, overwhelmed, stressed out in our mind – it causes the same brain damage as someone who has more severe PTSD-style trauma. (Sound familiar?)
- Approximately 95% of women in the United States have taken hormonal birth control at some point in their life.
- If you have a family history of Crohn’s disease (Autoimmune), you have a 300% increased risk of developing Crohn’s after 3 years on hormonal birth control.
- Hormonal birth control contributes to increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut), one of the main root causes/triggers of autoimmunity.
- There is research showing increased risk for MS, Ulcerative Colitis, Lupus, Interstitial Cystitis, and Crohn’s disease in women who have taken hormonal birth control for extended periods of time.
Birth Control & Autoimmunity (And What You Can Do About It) wtih Dr. Jolene Brighten
Nature & Earth Medicine for Autoimmunity with Dr. Maya Shetreat
- A discussion on health as resilience: What is hormesis? Can some stress be good for our health?
- Defining and explaining the Cell Danger Response as it pertains to inflammation cascades in the body
- The social vs. isolated immune system – consequences of our modern sterile life
- Many scientifically-backed benefits of being in contact with nature, forests, gardens, and animals
What you’ll learn:
- The strength of one’s Cortisol Activation Response (CAR) is an essential factor in regards to the body’s ability to destroy immune cells that are programmed for autoimmunity
- It’s very simple (and free) to improve/strengthen your CAR and Dr. Jones shares exactly how to do it!
- How does our CAR get out of whack? Learn some obvious (and not so obvious) destroyers of a healthy stress response and CAR!
- An overview of the light spectrum – and which kinds of light are helpful/harmful for our physiology. (HINT: This depends on the timeof day!)
